Roots
The 2016 remake of the miniseries Roots tells the story of Kunte Kinte’s unflinching commitment to his identity as a Mandinka warrior from West Africa. Despite being captured into slavery, Kinte retains his name, language, and traditions and passes them on to his daughter. The story, adapted from Alex Haley’s 1976 novel, follows Kinte’s ancestors and their struggle for freedom. Showing several generations necessitated costumes from different eras as well as costumes that visually distinguish the realities of slave life versus the life of the plantation owners.
Carter was nominated for an Emmy Award for her work on Roots.
